Our History and Successes

2004
Cynthia Farrar, Founder of Jury-Duty Spay & Neuter lost her beloved cat, Jury.
Cynthia and Gregory often refer to Jury as their first child having adopted them when
they were still newly weds.  Cynthia was overwhelmed with grief and realized that
she could direct this emotion to be a positive force and save the lives of countless
animals in our community.  After months of research Cynthia decided that the best
approach to ending the euthanize of over 12,000 animals in our community each
year was to have an organization devoted solely to spaying and neutering, which
can end this problem in the only humane solution.  The first ever assessment was
developed by Cynthia assessing the animal overpopulation and the solution to the
problem.

2005
Founded the Northwest Florida Animal Alliance, bringing together all animal welfare
organizations both public and private to coordinate services,

Guided and coordinated the first collaboration with our local humane society,
Pensacola Humane Society and the Escambia County Animal Control to be a
Charter recipient of the
Florida license plate grant and have subsequently received
grants from the organization for our own ongoing work with feral and free roaming
cats

Celebrated reaching the milestone of completing 100 "effective" spay/neuter
surgeries in one year (those that would otherwise never happened without financial
subsidies).

2006
Introduced a public awareness campaign to educate pet owners and residents in
our community of the importance of spaying and neutering.  These campaigns while
cute were and still are informative, and provoke conversations.

2007
Jury-Duty Spay & Neuter presented an ordinance to the County Commissioners and
they approved to fund a low cost spay and neuter program through an increased pet
license fee. This program is funded by your dollars.

Began the
Paws and Purrs Calendar Contest open to all owned and non-owned
animals in northwest Florida.  This event was a huge success and has continued to
grow over the years. This program was the first time in Pensacola history that a fund
raising event was conducted solely over the Internet.

Resurrected the
Spay Florida non-profit organization and under Cynthia’s
leadership veterinarian services contacts were established in each county in our
state.  As well as a toll free number and a database for access to the program
throughout Florida
.
Lobbied the Escambia County Commissioners to Proclaim February Spay and
Neuter Month.

Reached the milestone of completing 772 "effective" spay/neuter surgeries in a
single year (those that would otherwise never happened without financial subsidies).

2008
Presented to the County Commissioners a program to establish a spay and neuter
program through a license tag fee increase in Escambia County, and using the
extra proceeds to fund a county-run low income spay and neuter program

The first ‘Fur Ball’ was held in September 2008 and was a huge success with  over
one hundred guests enjoyed and evening of great food, art auction, and a silent
auction.

Recipient of the Florida Animal Friends Grant dedicated to solely spaying and
neutering of free roaming cats. The largest grant ever received in our area for spay
and neuter surgeries.

Reached the milestone of completing 950 "effective" spay/neuter surgeries in a
single year (those that would otherwise never happened without financial subsidies).

2009
We saw the establishment of the first Animal Advisory Committee to guide and
oversee Animal Services this year through the presentations presented by JDSN.

An increase in the low income guidelines for the county run spay and neuter
program to make the program more accessible to more residents. As of November
we have completed date 936 surgeries, we hope to surpass a 1000 targeted
surgeries this year.

As of September we reached the milestone of completing 957 "effective"
spay/neuter surgeries so far for the year (those that would otherwise never
happened without financial subsidies).
